Spark Your Inner Vision

Whether you are just getting started, or need that last little burst of inspiration to see your project through, this workshop weekend is for anyone who wants to step a bit deeper into the Writing Life. This year, we will be centering our time around the themes set out in Lewis Hyde's book, "The Gift" -- about receiving the gift of our own creative vision, talents and inspiration, developing the disciplines and techniques necessary to hone and harness those gifts, and culminating in our Sunday morning time, where we will look at ways to send the work and love and gift and vision -- back out into the World. There will be yoga, excellent and experienced instruction, delicious catered meals and abundant time in nature and in community with your fellow artists/writers.  Come & get your creative cup filled!!!

Course Description: Bestowal of the Gift ~ What happens to words after they have been crafted onto a page? Some rare and lucky gems become immediate best sellers and household names. But what about those words that occupy unseen or undervalued stations on the spectrum of creation? What value do they hold alone in a journal or published on a rarely visited blog? Lewis Hyde in his seminal work the Gift articulates the difficult challenge of being an artist in a culture that has commodified every aspect of life. He argues that one must bestow her creative “gifts” regardless of the market response. We will explore how historic and contemporary writers have navigated these turbulent waters and then contemplate how we each can remain true to our creative process and sustain ourselves financially and spiritually in our current life circumstances.

Course Description: Writing from Images Through a series of prompts and timed writings, we will explore the generative power of images as a basis for writing in any genre. Working both from observation of the physical, sensory world and from memory as sources of inspiration, this workshop draws upon the well of both conscious and subconscious images which the act of writing brings to the surface, opening the way to metaphor and the resonant evocation of human meaning.

Course Description: Receiving the Gift: After you have received the gift of inspiration, then what? How do you move beyond a first draft and hone the gift in preparation for sending it on, for multiplying it? Lewis Hyde in his amazing book The Gift provides some insights into ways in which an artist can shape his or her work. Using Hyde’s model, we’ll look at a number of ways to stand back from a draft, look at it more objectively, and practice several strategies for honing the gift, so it is ready for placing into someone else’s hands.
